FYI Here are some key links/notes to follow-up on an FCC webinar re: access to Broadband during Covid-19 that I was asked to attend. It sounds like an excellent benefit (albeit time-limited at this time) so PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD!!!! Perhaps of most importance, there will be a free, live webinar taking place Tuesday, 4/27 @ 3pm EST. The webinar can be accessed here: Live | Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov) Additionally, here is a link to information about the webinar: Emergency Broadband Benefit Webinar for Consumers and Outreach Partners | Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov) Here is a link to basic information about the Emergency Broadband Benefit: Emergency Broadband Benefit | Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov) Here is a link to Consumer FAQ’s: Consumer FAQ for Emergency Broadband Benefit | Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov) Finally, here is a link to the CT Emergency Broadband Providers: Emergency Broadband Benefit Providers | Federal Communications Commission (fcc.gov) Some highlights from the FAQ link: The Emergency Broadband Benefit provides a monthly discount on broadband service of up to $50 per eligible household (or up to $75 per eligible household on Tribal lands). The benefit is available to eligible new, prior and existing customers of participating providers. The participating broadband service provider will receive the funds directly from the Emergency Broadband Benefit program.
Who is eligible for the Emergency Broadband Benefit? A household is eligible if one member of the household meets at least one of the criteria below: – Qualifies for the Lifeline program; – Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, or did so in the 2019-2020 school year; – Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year; – Experienced a substantial loss of income since February 29, 2020 and the household had a total income in 2020 below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers; or – Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating providers’ existing low-income or COVID-19 program.
The start date has not yet been established, but it is anticipated that people will be able to sign up by the end of April. People can combine this benefit with Lifeline benefits/discounts that they may already be receiving and can sign up even if they have past due balances or balances in collections. The program will run until funds are exhausted or 6 months after the pandemic is officially declared to be over, whichever comes first (hopefully with advance notification!). People can choose to continue on with their Broadband service after this time without the benefit, but they must “opt in” to do so. (Hopefully this becomes a permanent benefit, not just during Covid – perhaps people who take advantage of the benefit can speak to the impact going forward…) I hope this is helpful,
